J. Scott Cooksey
Director of Bands
J. Scott Cooksey began serving as Band Director at Louisville Male High School in 2015. In addition to his current role at Male High School, Mr. Cooksey has served as a conductor for the Floyd County Youth Symphony since 2002. Mr. Cooksey is a graduate of the Youth Performing Arts School in Louisville and holds degrees in Music Education from the University of Louisville School of Music, as well as a graduate degree in Educational Leadership. He is currently pursuing a graduate degree in Music Performance with an emphasis in Instrumental Conducting with Dr. Fred Speck, at the University of Louisville. In 2013 Mr. Cooksey was honored to be selected as a semi-finalist for the first-ever GRAMMY Music Educator Award.
Before arriving at Louisville Male, Mr. Cooksey served as Director of Bands and Department Chair at Jeffersonville High School, Indiana. During his time at Jeffersonville High School the band program received consistent gold ratings in Indiana State School Music Association events, performed for the ISSMA State Concert Band State Finals, ISSMA Scholastic Marching Band State Finals, the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC), the National Adjudicator’s Invitational in Chicago and performed for the joint Music Educators National Conference / Indiana Music Educators Association convention. Notably the band program was named a GRAMMY Signature School music program in 2012. Recently the JHS Bands performed for the 2015 National Band and Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York. The JHS Winter Percussion Ensemble is a four-time TriState Championship ensemble (2011, 2013, 2014, 2015) with one additional silver medal (2008) and the JHS Winterguard has earned two TriState Championships (2012, 2013) also with one silver medal (2014). The JHS Band program received many competitive grant awards while under Mr. Cooksey’s leadership, including five Indiana Arts Commission regional initiative grants and three Target Arts and Culture grants.
Mr. Cooksey has served as a staff member for the Ambassadors of Music organization for five tours of Europe, traveling with two concert bands, a large choir, and a string orchestra made up of students from Kentucky and southern Indiana as they tour seven European countries presenting concerts along the way.
Mr. Cooksey is an active performer on his instrument, currently performing in both The Louisville Winds and Chamber Winds Louisville community ensembles. In addition to many local performances, both ensembles have recently performed for the KMEA conference. Chamber Winds Louisville recently presented a concert at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. Mr. Cooksey is active as an adjudicator and clinician, as well as presented district-wide professional development sessions on topics such as integration of technology in the K-12 classroom.
Mr. Cooksey currently holds professional membership in the National Association for Music Education, the Indiana Bandmasters Association, and the Indiana and Kentucky Music Education Associations. He recently served his fifth year on the elected ISSMA State Board, with an appointment to the Concert Organization Committee as the high school band representative. He is also serving a second term as the current elected State Board Area 8 Representative for IMEA.
Mr. Cooksey appreciates the opportunity to serve the Louisville community and Male HS students as your music director. His belief that everyone deserves a comprehensive, sequential music education that prepares them for lifelong involvement in music drives him to be the best educator he can be.
